Robert W. Counihan, of Rockland, passed away May 6th, 2023 after a brief struggle with cancer. He was 89.
Born and raised in Boston, Bob lived in Rockland for the last 58 years. Bob went into the Army after high school and is a Korean War Veteran ultimately serving 9 years on Active Duty and 10 years in the Reserves. After leaving Active Duty, he had a number of professions including working at TWA, being a Union carpenter and working as a Postal Worker. Bob was best known for being a family man.
He was married to the late Janet Counihan for 51 years and over the course of his life helped raise his own children, his grandchildren and was a strong influence on nephews and nieces and many friends of the family. His family extended across the sea and he maintained very close ties to his Irish cousin Anne Donnelly and her family, as well as other cousins. He loved the sea; and owned a number of small boats over the years.
He was the devoted father to Robert J. Counihan, Dr. Timothy and wife Deborah Counihan of Lewiston ME, and Laura A. Behan of Rockland. He was the grandfather to Jacob Counihan, Derek and husband Randolph Escobar-Behan, and Brendan Behan. He was the brother of Kathleen “Kay” Greene and the late Jack Counihan, Leonora Grant and Michael Counihan. He was also survived by many nephews and nieces.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday, May 10, 4-8 PM at McDonald Funeral Home, South Weymouth at 809 Main Street (Rte. 18 opp. So Shore Hosp.) In lieu of flowers please donate in his memory to the Disabled American Veteran’s at DAV.org.
