Robert R. Montgomery Jr.

Robert “Bob” R. Montgomery, Jr, beloved husband of Mary (Murphy) Montgomery for 68 years, passed away at home Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at the age of 91.

Bob was born in Boston, Mass, and was a graduate of Boston High School of Commerce.  He enlisted in the Navy serving as a radioman aboard the USS Langley and USS Yorktown and was the recipient of 12 major battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation.

He worked for the New England Telephone Company for 40 years.  Following in his father’s footsteps, he was a union steward and eventually president of the International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers. At age 35, he became president of the Alliance of Independent Telephone Unions. He later served as a manager of New England Telephone Co. as well as President of the Board of Directors of the Telephone Workers Credit Union and as a director of the Massachusetts Credit Union Share Insurance Corporation.

Bob served on many Hingham town boards. He was a member of the Personnel Board, the Affordable Housing Committee, the Council on Aging and South Shore Elder Services. He was a faithful communicant of St. Paul’s Church for over 40 years. He was always ready to help people and his community in any way, and was a tireless activist for peace and social justice.

He enjoyed sharing the many interesting experiences of his life with people, but of all his many stories, his favorite to share was of the day he met his life’s love, Mary. He said that the best decision he ever made was to take his sister Edna’s suggestion to go on his first date with Mary. The most important thing to him was his family and there was nothing he loved better then helping them and spending time with them.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Edna (Thompson) and Robert R. Montgomery, and his sisters Edna Ezell and Regina Grady.  Along with his wife Mary, Bob is survived by his brother Paul Montgomery of West Roxbury, and two sons and a daughter: Bob Montgomery, III and his wife Arlene Treacy of Barrington, RI, Jean Marie Montgomery and her good friend John Brandt of Hingham, George Montgomery and his wife Darlene of Andover, and grandchildren: George Montgomery Jr, Tania (Diatchenko) Layden, Amanda Montgomery, Michael Diatchenko, Sean Montgomery, and Anna Montgomery, and great-children: Ashley, Kyle, Angela and Robert
