Robert L. Williams, of Braintree, MA, owner of Scott-Williams, Inc. of Quincy, MA died on September 4, 2023 at the age of 87.

The son of the late Lawrence Williams and Bertha Sommers Williams, he was born in Dorchester, MA and grew up in North Quincy, MA. He graduated from North Quincy High in 1953 and Bates College in 1957. He attended Graduate Business School at the University of Chicago. At Bates he was treasurer of his class for all 4 years, a member of the golf team for 3 years, a proctor and a member of the Bates Key. He was a past President of his alumni class and an Alumni Fund class Chairman for many years.

He served in the U.S. Navy for over 3 years. He attended officer Candidate school in Newport, RI, graduating as an Ensign in 1959. He attended U.S. Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA during the summer of 1959. He served as supply officer aboard the U.S.S. McNair DD-679 from 1959-1961. From 1961-1962 he served as the commissary officer of the U.S. Naval Disciplinary Command in Portsmouth, N.H. He attained the rank of Lt. at the end of his tour of  duty.

He was the owner and chairman of the board of Scott-Williams, Inc, an oil heating company in Quincy, MA. He was past President of the Quincy Jaycees, past President of the South Shore Fuel Dealers (also the treasurer of the organization for 10 years), past Vice-Chairman of the Massachusetts Oil Heat Council (also on the Board of Directors for many years), a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Fuel Institute for many years, past President of the Granite Park Civic Association of Braintree, past Treasurer of the So. Braintree Civic Association, Braintree Town Meeting Member for 10 years, past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the First Congregational Church of Braintree and Moderator of the church for 14 years. He was an avid handball player for most of his life and was an Ambassador for the United States Handball Association.

His hobbies included travel, handball, golf, reading, weight training, music, meditation and yoga. He spent many winters in Jupiter, FL He leaves his wife Judith Roberts Williams, son Kenneth and wife Lisa of Hanover, daughter Sharon Williams and husband James Kane of Virginia, and son Jeffrey and wife Lee of Marlborough. Brother of Judith Gordon and her companion Jerry Applefield. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Tyler Williams, Jessica Williams, Leah Kane, Lauren Williams, and Nathan Kane.

Funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, September 9 at 11:00 AM in First Congregational Church of Braintree,12 Elm Street, Braintree, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name may be made to Tunnels to Towers, 2361 Hylan Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10306.
