Shannon, Robert L. of Hull January 20, 2004 (Retired Hull Police Chief). Husband of the late Linda R. (Taurasi) Shannon. Loving father of Carol & her husband Edmund of Hingham and the late Lynda M. & her husband Joseph A. DiVito of Hull. Loving grandfather of Terri A. Petriella of Pearl River, NY, William A. Doyle, III, Joseph A. DiVito, Jr. & Robert Shannon DiVito, all of Hull. Brother of Phyllis Jutkiewicz of Boston. Also survived by 5 great grandchildren and several nieces & nephews. Robert L. Shannon of Hull was a former Police Chief of the Town of Hull and a former director of the Hull Cooperative Bank. He was born in New Bedford and was a resident of Hull for over 60 years. He was 88. He was appointed to the Hull Police Dept. as a Permanent Intermittent Patrolman in 1943 upon discharge there from. He was appointed Chief of Police in October of 1971 and retired in August of 1980. Mr. Shannon served the Town of Hull in various appointed and elective offices, both long and short term as a member and Executive Director of the Hull Housing Authority, Member & Chairman of the Personnel Board, Member of the Hull Redevelopment Committee, Member of the WWII War Memorial Reconstruction Committee, Constable, Deputy Civil Defense Director, Member of the Bylaw Study Committee, Director of the Beach Patrol, Member of the Permanent Sewer Commission and Parking Ticket Hearings Officer. Prior to his permanent appointment with the Hull Police, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 9 years. Part of his time he served aboard the U.S.S. Cleveland (a light cruiser). He was a WWII veteran of the European-African-Middle East and Asiatic-Pacific campaigns and held the rank of Sergeant Major at the time of his discharge from the U.S.M.C. He was a life member of the V.F.W. (Hull Post #1787 of which he was a past Commander), a life member of the D.A.V. (Quincy Chapter #79), the Knights of Columbus (Hull Council #4865) and the Sons of Italy (South Shore Lodge #1850). Mr. Shannon was a member of the MA Plymouth County Police Chiefs Assoc, the MA Police Assoc., and the Hull Police Relief Assoc. He was an avid golfer, gardener and loved to travel.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM Saturday at 8 AM. Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Hull at 9 AM. Visiting hours Friday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mr. Shannon may be made to St. Mary’s Parish, St. Ann’s Church Building Fund, PO Box 565, Hull, MA 02045.
