Robert Joseph Logue, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and a devoted community servant, died Wednesday morning at his home in Hingham. He was 82.
Born in Dorchester in 1932, he grew up in a house on Stockton Street shared by several generations of his family. He was predeceased by his parents Eleanor and Aubrey, sister Anne and brother Aubrey. He graduated from Dorchester High School in 1950. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving as a radio mechanic and postal worker.
His service brought him to bases across the United States including Sioux City, Iowa, where he met his future wife, Jo-an (Ahart). They were married in Dow City, Iowa in 1956. The ceremony was held at St. Mary Church, a parish co-founded by the Ahart family. Their honeymoon was the drive back to Boston, with stops at the homes of Ahart relatives along the way. Bob built his career working for New England Telephone and retired in 1992.
The Logues raised three children in Weymouth, where Jo-an worked as a public school teacher for decades. The family frequently returned to Iowa, driving there and back most summers in the family station wagon. Logue was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Weymouth, serving as a Eucharistic minister and usher. He was active in numerous community organizations, including the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Weymouth Food Pantry. He worked as a volunteer handyman through the Hingham Senior Center and for LifeLine, where he used his knowledge of the telephone system to install emergency alert systems for seniors.
An avid golfer, Logue was a member of the South Shore Country Club for two decades. He was a longtime fan of the New England Patriots (he was particularly happy about this weekend’s win) and had rooted for the Boston Red Sox since he was a boy.
In addition to his wife, Logue is survived by three children: Robert J. Logue, Jr., and his wife MaryEllen of Sutton; Katie Keegan and her husband Brian, of Weymouth; and Anne Collette and her husband Paul, of Pawcatuck, Conn. He also leaves eight grandchildren: Sarah Keegan and her fiancé Paris Argyropoulos of Boston; Christine Casali and her husband Dean of Framingham; Andrew Keegan of South Bend, Ind., Matthew Collette of New York, N.Y.; Michael Logue of Sutton; John Collette of Boston; Robert Keegan, currently traveling in New Zealand; and Emily Collette, of New York, N.Y. He also leaves two great-grandchildren, Eva and Logan Casali, the children of Christine and her husband, Dean.
Bob will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for his endless sense of humor and dry wit, and especially for his love and pride of his family.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 1-4 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street (off RT.3A-Bicknell Sq.) Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 10 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, Weymouth at 11 AM. Burial in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Vincent De Paul Society, 1199 Commercial Street, Weymouth, MA 02189.
