Robert J. Caragher, 88, of Hingham, MA, died Monday, September 15, 2014 after an extended illness.  He had moved to Hingham in 2012 after over 40 years of residence in Ridgefield, Stratford and Madison, CT. 

Born April 15, 1926 in Queens Village, NY, to John and Julia (McCarthy) Caragher, he was predeceased by his parents as well as his brothers, John and Francis, and his sister, Doris Croissant.  He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carol (Gistedt) of Hingham, his devoted children, Robert of Claremont, CA, Joan of West Newbury, MA, and James of Lafayette, NJ, his daughter-in-law, Nancy, and grandchildren, Megan and Andrew, all of Lafayette, and many nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Beckman of Toms River, NJ, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Maureen Gistedt of Williston Park, NY.

A 1944 graduate of St. Augustine High School in Brooklyn, NY, he served in the U.S. Army in World War II in Italy and Germany.  After returning home from military service, he received a B.S. degree in chemistry from St. John’s University in New York in 1950.  He pursued a career in transportation logistics in the chemical industry, and was employed by several railroad and chemical companies, including Olin Corp. of Stamford, CT, from which he retired in 1989 after over 20 years of service.

A talented woodworker and handyman, gregarious traveler, and fan of cookies, chocolate and fine wines, he will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all who were fortunate to know him.  Viewing is private at Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham.  Service and burial are Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the State of Connecticut Veterans’ Cemetery in Middletown, CT.  A memorial mass will be offered at St. Albert’s Church in Weymouth, MA at a later date.
