Robert G. King of Duxbury, formerly of Weymouth, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2023. He was 77 years old.
Born in Boston, MA he was the beloved son of the late Louis A. King and Dorothy King (Graham). Beloved and devoted father of Sandra L. King of Scituate and Robert G. King Jr. of CA. Dear brother of Richard C. King of Cotuit and the late L. Allen King Jr. of Falmouth. Devoted, loving and beloved grandfather of Elena D. Ponichtera and Reese L. Ponichtera of Scituate. Loving and cherished friend of Penelope Blume of Hingham. Loving Uncle to many nieces and nephews and extended family members and cherished friends.
Robert spent his very early years in Quincy and then spent the majority of his childhood years growing up in Weymouth. He graduated from Weymouth High School class of 1963. As a boy his consuming interest was sports and he excelled in many including baseball, basketball and golf and became one of the best junior golfers in New England. He was also the 2- time Junior Champion of South Shore Country Club. He was a lead Marshall for the Arnold Palmer – Gary Player golf match at SSCC in June 1962. He was the captain of various high school and college Varsity sports teams.
Robert graduated from Babson College in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration, enlisted in the Army Reserves, and then went to work in Boston for Ernst and Ernst. In 1971 Robert became a Certified Public Accountant and accepted a position with the Polaroid Company in their Tax Department. He also took post graduate work at Babson leading to a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1974. In 1975 he went to work for the Howard Johnson Company of Quincy and also earned a Masters of Science in Taxation at Bentley College. In 1979 Robert became Head of the Howard Johnson Company Tax Department and was elected Vice President of the Company in 1982. He then became the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Ground Round. Robert held numerous other senior leadership positions in Finance, Accounting and Taxation, particularly in the restaurant industry, until he retired at age 52.
In the early 1970s and 1980’s Robert raised a family in his hometown of Weymouth. They later moved to Hingham. Robert was an incredible father to his children and nothing gave him greater pleasure than their passions, hard work, and success. He was instrumental in his daughter, Sandra’s, junior tennis accomplishments which mirrored his own prowess in golf. He was actively involved in his son Robert’s attainment of Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts of America. Never an opportunity passed where Robert wasn’t prioritizing family nights of outdoor lawn games, homemade sledding tracks, ping pong duels, church events, trips to Paragon Park, mini-golf and ice cream. He was simply the best father that one could ever imagine who always made the time to enjoy the many joys and wonders with his children.
In his retirement, Robert was able to rediscover his passion for golf and his true love of sports competition. He was a lifelong 65 year member of South Shore Country Club, a past President of the SSCC Men’s Golf Association, a 4-time Men’s Golf Champion and a cherished MVP teammate to all of his beloved golf partners. He also earned at least 2 holes-in-one at SSCC and won numerous Cups, creating lifetime memories, stories, and laughs with his many teammates. Incredibly, he designed, built and loving maintained his own Field of Dreams home golf course.
He fondly summered in Alton Bay, NH, one of his favorite places on earth, for 40 years and one of his greatest pleasures was creating endless memories and magic on Lake Winnipesauke with his children and grandchildren. He leaves an enduring legacy of accomplishments through hard work and dedication, a supreme example of the importance of values and family, and prioritizing time and focus entirely to the most important people, goals, and dreams in life, all the while enjoying and living life to the fullest extent.
