Richard (Dick) Scipione, a longtime resident of Hingham and summer resident of Chatham, formerly of Newton, passed away on Monday September 2, 2024, at Sunrise Assisted Living after a brief illness. Born in Boston on August 27, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles Scipione Jr. and Alice (Sgotto) Scipione and brother of the late Joan Coyne. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Lois (Mugford) Scipione. Dick grew up in Newton, attended Newton schools and graduated from Harvard University and Boston University Law School.
Dick had a distinguished career in law, starting out as a Captain in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, and then serving in the law department at John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company for 35 years, retiring after 13 years as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. He received many awards throughout his career but was most proud of the Boston Bar Foundation’s Public Service Award in 1999 for his role in ensuring equal access to justice for all individuals and strengthening the relationship between the legal profession and the community. After retiring from John Hancock, Dick taught aspiring lawyers at Boston University Law school.
In addition to having a successful career, Dick cherished his role as a dad. He coached baseball, despite never having played himself, drove to tennis lessons, golf matches, sailing school, and soccer games, and packed his sons a brown bag lunch for school every day. In his spare time, Dick was an avid reader and loved diving into books about American and World History. He was a longtime member of the Harvard Club of Boston and the Chatham Yacht Club. He loved the theater, the Holiday Pops, and most especially introducing his granddaughters to the arts. While Dick and Lois loved living in Hingham and spending the summers at the beach, they also enjoyed traveling the world.
Dick is survived by his sons, Jeff Scipione and his wife Megan of Winchester, and Doug Scipione and his wife Angela of Hingham. Richard was the loving grandfather of Emma, Eden, Julia, and Jessica. Richard’s funeral services and interment will be held privately.
