Allen, Richard S. (“Dick”, “Bud”) of Pine Ridge, Florida passed away September 10, 2022 at his residence under the loving care of his family and Vitas Hospice.

Entered into rest with his Savior after a courageous battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, devoted husband of 50+ years to Brenda “JoAnn” (Davenport) Allen, loving father of Danna LeeAnn Bell (Christopher) of Norwood, MA; Troy M. (Stacey) of Pine Ridge, Fl; Jeffrey N. of Beverly Hills, Fl and the late Barbara “Kim” Allen.  Brother of Randall J., Ronald K., and Barbara J. Allen, all of Plymouth, MA; Beverly A. Thibault (Henry) of Tiverton, Rhode Island and the late Robert D. and Rodger L. Allen; survived by 10 grandchildren: Selina, David, Kristen, Sara, Jeremy, Nicholas, Anastasia, Logan, Luke, and Eve; and 9 great grandchildren: Dandre, Maria, Ariyan, Gianna, Madisyn, Mackenzie, Ryder, Grayson and Maisie.  Born in Norwood, MA to the late Chester A. and Eleanor M. (Smith) Allen.

Bud grew up in Westwood and Norwood, MA.  After graduating from Westwood High School in 1965, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and did a tour of duty in Vietnam in the mid-sixties as a helicopter gunner flying medivac and resupply missions.  He was awarded the Purple Heart medal, Combat Air Crew Wings with 3 bronze stars, Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Presidential Unit Citation; Rifle and Pistol Sharpshooter; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal ; upon honorably discharged from USMC, he attended the New England Institute of Anatomy, Sanitary Science and Embalming and became a licensed funeral service professional; working at two funeral homes over a nearly 40 year career, he retired in 2007 after 32 years with Keohane Funeral Service, Quincy, MA.  Once retired, he and JoAnn moved to Pine Ridge, Florida where he enjoyed golfing (achieved two holes-in-one!); motorcycle riding; boating on Nature Coast rivers with the grandkids and maintaining his estate.  He established a rehab and rental home company where he rehabbed houses and made them affordable to low-income families.  In 2008, he became a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and joined Aaron Weaver Chapter 776 Citrus County, becoming Commander in 2012, and was re-elected annually until 2020.  He was selected as Patriot of the Year in 2018 and 2019 for the Chapter, State of Florida, and Region IV Southeast United States.  The chapter purpose is to educate the community and make them aware of the proud legacy of the Purple Heart awarded to combat wounded veterans.  Life member of DAV Chapter 70, Inverness, Florida.  He was a Champion breeder and member of the Rhode Island Budgerigar Society in the 1980’s and 1990’s, breeding and showing birds up and down the East Coast and winning many awards and ribbons.

Funeral services will be held on Monday , September 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Homosassa with Rev. David Throkmorton officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery on Monday at 2:00 PM.  There will be a viewing Sunday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness.  The Purple Heart Chapter will present their tribute at 7:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in “Bud’s” memory to the  Aaron Weaver Chapter 776 MOPH, PO Box 1345, Lecanto, Florida.
