Richard D. Mann, 81, of Hingham, MA, formerly of Walpole and Franklin, passed away Friday, August 12th, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. 

Dick was brought up in Franklin, MA and graduated from Dean Academy.  He attended Dartmouth College where he earned a B.A. in 1957.  After serving three years as Engineering Officer on the USS Hawkins DDR 873, he attended the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth, earning an MBA in 1960.  After graduation, he joined his family textile firm of Buckley & Mann in Norfolk, MA, eventually becoming President and co-owner.  In 1992, Draper Knitting Company of Canton, MA bought the business, and Dick worked there for ten years.  At the end of his career, he worked briefly for Clark, Cutler, McDermott of Franklin, MA.  He was a deacon of the United Church, and served on the boards of Draper Knitting, the Rockland Trust Co, and Clark, Cutler, McDermott.  He was a dedicated trustee of Dean College in Franklin, where he served for many years, including ten years as Chairman of the Board.  He loved the outdoors, especially skiing, tennis, and hiking, and often led his family on hikes in the white mountains.  He played lacrosse and was an excellent swimmer.  Dick was an avid reader and loved to discuss politics.  He was fun-loving, interesting, and well-loved by all who knew him.  

He is survived by his wife, Lois, his daughter, Cory, her husband, David, and their two daughters, Kate and Molly, his son, Jeff, and his daughter, Joanna.  Joanna’s twin sister, Deborah, pre-deceased him as the result of a pulmonary embolism.  

A Celebration of Dick’s life will be held at Linden Ponds, 203 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham on September 17th at 11 am.
