Rev. Edward F. Gillis

Gillis, Rev. Edward F. of Hingham, passed away November 24, 2011. Beloved son of the late Edward F. and Loretto (Brine) Gillis. Loving brother of Louise I. Gillis of Braintree, Ruth E. Ryan and her husband, Paul, of Norwell and the late Paul C. Gillis, Mary T. Jacobs and Barbara L. Barron. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Fr. Gillis entered the United States Navy where he served with the First and Third Marine Divisions. He was also stationed in Washington D.C. and aboard the U.S.S. Providence and the U.S.S. Ranger. He was proud of his twenty year enlistment in the United States Navy. During his 20 year career in the U.S. Navy he proudly served as captain. Fr. Gillis was also Director of Vocations in the Archdiocese of Boston for many years. Returning to the Archdiocese he served as an associate in many area churches. Fr. Gillis was also appointed Pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Wakefield in 1976 and later became Pastor at Holy Ghost Church in Whitman in 1985. A Rite of Reception will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 856 Washington Street, Braintree at 2 p.m. and will lie in state there until 4 p.m. A Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Catholic Charities 51 Sleeper Street, Boston, MA 02210
