Raymond N. Tremblay “Chief One Bear”

Raymond N. “Chief One Bear” Tremblay of Holyoke formerly of Weymouth, passed away suddenly on March 6, 2013.

He was 95 years of age. Born in Worcester, he was raised and educated in Quincy and had lived in Weymouth for many years before moving to Holyoke 3 years ago where he found his “Heaven” in the Holyoke Soldiers Home. . 

Son of the late Eugene and Clara (Thibodeau) Tremblay. Beloved husband of the late Margaret (Spillane) Tremblay. Loving father of Jeanne Solimini of Abington, Dianne Tremblay of Westwood, Ray Tremblay married to Dolores of Norton, Marie Sergio married to Joe of Bridgewater, David Tremblay married to Susan of Bridgewater and the late Margaret “Peggy” Winchell wife of Randy of Mississippi. Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren,  11 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Brother of the late Norman Tremblay. 

Ray, “Chief One Bear”, was a descendant of the the Native American Indian, Chippewa Tribe, which led to his involvement in several intertribal groups. He was very proud of his heritage and founded TOPIC (The Order for the Preservation of Indian Culture) in 1976. Ray worked in the Weymouth School System as a custodian before his retirement and also taught ceramics and pottery. Ray served in the US Army during WWII and was Post Chaplain of the VFW in East Weymouth. He enjoyed sketching and playing the piano.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the McDonald Funeral Home, SOUTH WEYMOUTH, at 809 Main St. (Rte 18 opp South Shore Hospital) Monday evening 4:00-8:00 pm. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Tuesday morning at 9:00 to be followed by a Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church at 10:00 and  burial in the Village Cemetery, Weymouth.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to TOPIC 3 Evergreen Road, Norton MA 02766.
