Ray Thomas Granai

Ray Thomas “Tom” Granai, 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher and coach died peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at Linden Ponds in Hingham.

He was born in Quincy, MA on May 1, 1940, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Renato “Ray” Granai of Weymouth, MA. After graduating from Weymouth High School in 1958 Tom attended Harvard University, majoring in History and graduating with Honors in the Class of 1962. While in college Tom met the love of his life, Susan “Sue” Firth, and they married in 1964. Tom spent his career working in the Weymouth school system, first as an English teacher and baseball coach. He then became an Assistant Principal, serving for more than 30 years and helping generations of Weymouth students come of age through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s before retiring in 2000.

Tom and Sue lived a very happy life, bringing up their family in Norwell, retiring to their “dream house” on the Cape, and then spending their final years together in the warm and welcoming community of Linden Ponds. Tom was a passionate New England sports fan, with an encyclopedic knowledge of players and statistics. His favorite team was the Boston Red Sox, which he rooted for just as hard (and just as loud) whether they were in first place or last. Tom passed along his love for sports to his children and grandchildren, and nothing made him prouder than hearing about all of their many accomplishments.

He is known for never missing a game for either of his kids throughout their high school and college careers, and he was truly their “Number One Fan” in sports and in life. Tom never met a dog he did not love and that did not love him back, and he always held a special place in his heart for Daisy and Cleo. Whether you knew him as Tom or Ray, as his many lifelong friends and colleagues from the Weymouth schools did, his infectious laugh always brought a smile to the face of everyone with him. He was known fondly as “Poppy” by his five grandkids, and as an all-around good guy by all who met him.

Tom is survived by his wife Sue of Hingham; son Scott Granai and wife Beth of Cary, NC; daughter Stephanie Gould and husband Justin of Norwell; and his beloved grandchildren: Allison, Rachel, Brendan, Adam and Sean.

Arrangements are private, with a Celebration of Life planned for a forthcoming date. Memorial donations to the Weymouth Scholarship Fund Committee are appreciated.
