Cheverie, Philip R., of Pembroke, formerly of Quincy, passed away January 15, 2010 after a courageous year long battle with cancer. He died at home in the arms of his loving family on the date of his 38th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his devoted wife Ellen M. (Roberts) Cheverie and sons Christian P. Cheverie & his wife Stephanee of Carver, Shawn R. Cheverie of Pembroke, and John J. Cheverie & his wife Hadley of Bridgewater. Proud Papa to Ben and Sam Cheverie and looked forward to additional grandchildren in later this year. Born in Dorchester, Philip grew up in Quincy and graduated from Quincy Vocation Technical School and later earned his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. He then joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Intrepid later taking part in the historic rescue operation for the Gemini space shuttle. After proudly serving his country, Philip joined the Quincy Police Department and retired after a 32 year career. Philip Cheverie was an outgoing person with a keen sense of humor and a passion for life. He had several interests and hobbies and enjoyed a great many things. One of Phil’s passions was fixing up and customizing old cars and attending car shows around the New England area where he won numerous awards. He was a talented gardner and with wife Ellen, built a lovely backyard in Pembroke filled with beautiful flowers, plants and vegetables. Philip was good with his hands and could fix or build just about anything. He enjoyed boating and vacationing with family on Long Lake in Bridgton, Maine. There are many different ways to remember Phil, but those who loved him know that his defining characteristic was his giving nature. Phil was a special person with a big heart who was always willing to help those in need. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15AM on Wednesday prior to the Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church at 10 AM. Donations in memory of Philip may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th floor, Brookline, MA 02445-7226 ATTN: Contribution Services.
