Peter Mcdonough

Peter Joseph McDonough, of Quincy, and formerly of Westwood and South Boston, succumbed to a lengthy illness on July 31, 2023 at Queen Ann’s Nursing Home in Hingham, Massachusetts at the age of 78.

Peter was born on November 14, 1944 into a large Irish Catholic family. He was raised by his mother, Margaret (Sullivan) McDonough whom he adored. Peter attended South Boston High School and would later earn a degree in accounting from Bentley College while simultaneously working full-time to earn his degree. He later became a certified public accountant and worked at various CPA firms in the Boston area and for a national nursing home chain.

“Sweet Pete” was the devoted father of Steven McDonough of Norwood; Dianne Ryan and her husband Chris of Braintree; and David McDonough of Arlington. He was previously married to Anne McDonough. “Grandpa Pete” adored and cherished spending time with his two grandchildren, Madison and Liam Ryan of Braintree.

Peter leaves behind his sister, Francis McManus of Roslindale and his brother Paul McDonough and wife Mary of Cocoa Beach, Florida in addition to his cousin Sean Sullivan of Braintree and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his elder sisters, Mary (McDonough) Elder; Barbara (McDonough) Romano and Helen (McDonough) Rogers. He had a close relationship with his brother-in-law Thomas Romano who predeceased him.

Pete loved to watch old westerns and war movies, talk about Quincy politics, listen to music from the 1960’s and playing cards. He would reminisce about going to Castle Island as a child with his family and growing up in Southie. Peter enjoyed attending musicals and concerts with his family with “The Producers” and Rod Stewart being some of his favorite performances. Even during his last few months, listening to music and watching westerns (which he could still identify every major star) while drinking a frappe with David brought him joy. In his later years after his MS diagnosis Peter enjoyed a simple visit and conversation with his children over a cup of Dunkin or a meal of Chinese food. However, it was his time visiting with Madison and Liam that brought him the most joy as he recently said with enthusiasm, “I used to babysit Madison every Tuesday and then have dinner with Liam and Dianne and those were the best days of my life”.

Family and friends are invited to join in the celebration of Peter’s life with a funeral mass at ST. JOHN’S the BAPTIST CHURCH, 44 SCHOOL STREET, QUINCY on Tuesday, August 8th at 10 o’clock. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MS Focus) at msfocus.org.
