Paul J. Smith

Paul J. Smith, 86 years old passed away at his home in Weymouth MA where he lived for over 57 years.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Mary C. (Hernon) Smith, whom he married on June 9th 1951. He was a loving father to his eight children; Jeanne Smith of Weymouth, Paul Smith and his late wife Mary of Cumming Georgia, Marianne O’Brien and her husband Stephen of Quincy, Barbara Esposito and her husband Scott of Cohasset, William Smith and his wife Louise of Weymouth, David Smith and his wife Debra of Weymouth, Carolyn Nickas and her husband Anthony of Hamilton, John Smith and his wife Nancy of Weymouth. A loving grandfather to sixteen grandchildren and great grandfather to eight. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he thought the world of. He was predeceased by his parents John and Helen (Garvin) and his siblings John, Thomas, Helene, Ann and Katherine.

A devoted Catholic, Paul’s life centered around service to his family, his country, his church and his community. He was a proud veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean war. One of his defining characteristics was that he wasn’t just there for his kids, he was there for the members of his community. If he ever saw someone who needed help he stepped in and helped without fanfare or recognition and supported them until they thrived.

He attended night classes and received his Bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University in 1971 while working full time at New England Telephone Company. He was an innovator in the telecommunications industry and founded American Communication Systems in 1974 where he served as CEO.

He had a great sense of humor and loved the time he spent with his good friends at the Talbot club. He was also proud of his Dorchester roots where he was known as “Red” and he was a life time member of the OFD club. He was full of life and had a profound impact on all that were blessed to know him. Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
