Patrick Joseph Flaherty, Sr.

Flaherty, Patrick Joseph, Sr. of South Boston  and Abington died unexpectedly at his home in Abington on Thursday evening January 26, 2016, he was 61. 

Born in Chelsea on May 12, 1954 and raised in South Boston. He is predeceased by his parent the late Francis and Irene (Sullivan) Flaherty of Boston. He attended Boston Latin School, where he played football with friends he would keep throughout his life. He proudly served his country with distinction in the United States Marine Corps., a time he frequently remembered with pride. After being honorably discharges he returned home and began a career at the United States Postal Service, where he would work as a letter carrier for nearly 20 years. In 1985 he wed Maryellen (Dalzell) Flaherty of Boston and in 1992 they moved to Abington with their growing family. In 2002 Pat began a new career with the Boston Fire Department, first as a firefighter with Engine 2 in South Boston and later as a rehab councilor. Never satisfied with his accomplishments, in his last years Pat pursued a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from UMass Boston. Friends and family will remember Pat for his sharp wit, generosity, and his tireless dedication to others.

He was a incredible father, friend and colleague. Pat is the loving father of Patrick J. Flaherty,Jr.  and his wife Catherine (Staffier) of Malden, Molly K. Flaherty of Dedham and Kerry C. Flaherty of Abington. Cherished Grandpa of Edward Charles Murray. Former husband of Maryellen (Dalzell) Flaherty. Brother of Paula Flaherty of South Boston and many many friends and relatives who will remember him warmly. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday, February 1 from  4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital) All are invited and encouraged to share their memories of Pat.

Cremation will follow. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery at a later date.
