Patricia “Pat” O’Brien

O’Brien, Patricia “Pat” of Hingham, MA formerly of New York City, died August 22, 2017 at age 87.

Beloved youngest daughter of the late William and Agnes O’Brien. Devoted sister of the late Kay O’Brien, John O’Brien, Grace McIver, Mary Godfrey and William O’Brien. Cherished aunt of many nieces and nephews. Beloved by many, including her friends in the Catholic Alumni Club, the White Plains Ski Club, the Miramar Ski Club, her fellow Jensenites, the Scandanavia Travelers Club and many more social organizations.

Pat was known for her brilliant mind, her gracious way, her beautiful smile and her amazing voice. Pat was a woman of many talents and interests, including theater, golf, tennis, cross country as well as alpine black diamond skiing, and piano playing. She loved international travel as well as hiking and camping with both the CAC and the Appalachian Club. Pat was a regular attendee at the Metropolitan Opera and sang professionally in theater, New York opera choruses and church choirs. She especially enjoyed singing at the annual lighting of the tree at Rockefeller center.

In 1963, Pat graduated Magna Cum Laude from Columbia University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.  Her career with Lever Brothers spanned many decades beginning in the 1950’s. She was responsible for designing many of their computer systems and ended her career as a senior systems analyst and manager. Friends say she could analyze and solve any problem presented to her. In 1990 Pat retired to Pleasantville, New York where she continued her life long volunteer work at local hospitals. True to her nature, she was not merely a visitor. Pat would cheerfully pitch in taking care of people and performing tasks such as making beds.

Known for her lively gatherings and ability to organize and inspire fun activities, she will be missed by many. The family would like to extend deepest gratitude to the staff at Linden Ponds for their loving care over the past 9 years. Pat got much pleasure from conversing with staff in french, one of the many languages she spoke. Pat touched everyone she met while there and we know she was deeply loved by her caregivers as well.
