Patricia Moran Estes, of Sarasota, FL, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2016, after a long illness, with her sons by her side. She was 76 years old.
Born in London, England, to Irish and English parents, she was raised in a Catholic orphanage in Kent from the age of three, as part of the Operation Pied Piper relocation effort after World War II began. After attending Chislehurst & Sidcup Technical Girls’ School, she began working as a secretary in London at age 16. She later traveled to Germany where she met her former husband, Richard C. Estes, an American soldier stationed there. They married in Switzerland in January 1963, and eventually settled in her husband’s hometown of Garden City, NY, where they had two boys. Over the ensuing years, Patricia pursued various vocations, including working as a supervisor for a municipal department of parks and recreation until her retirement in 2004.
A lover of music, dancing, and the outdoors, her greatest passion through her adult life was gardening. She grew vegetables, berries, wild flowers, and plants to remind her of her homeland landscape, tending beautiful and vibrant beds. She was an avid walker, and also enjoyed bike rides at Long Island’s beaches. Patricia was a spiritual person, and her faith in something that transcended the physical world carried her through her repeated battles with cancer. She left New York for Sarasota in 2013, where she continued her gardening, drawing strength and comfort from the warm sun and nearby beaches. She spent her final days in Hingham, MA, surrounded by loved ones.
Patricia is survived by her two sons: Richard C. Estes, Jr., and his wife Kathleen, of Short Hills, NJ; and Raymond C. Estes, and his wife Jennifer, of Hingham, MA; her seven beloved grandchildren: Gordon, Olivia, Spencer, Mitzi, Cooper, Ellie, and Joanna; her four sisters: Cecilia White, Helen Poulter, Lucelle Raad Hausman, and Yvonne Booroff; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins, both in the United States and abroad.
Services will be held at Pyne Keohane Funeral Home in Hingham, MA, on January 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m., and burial to follow at Hingham’s High Street Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Patricia’s name to the American Cancer Society.
