Olga V. Leone

On October 9, 2013 the world lost a wonderful woman.

Olga Vanya (Segai) Leone was born on May 4, 1926 in the gritty steel town of Braddock, PA.  She was the eldest of the three children of Evdokim and Agnes Segai.  After graduating from high school in 1943 she moved to Washington DC to support the war effort as a secretary for a government agency.  After the war (1946), she returned to Washington DC to visit friends and during that vacation she met a G.I. from Weymouth, MA who had returned from the European Theater and was now stationed in the District.  On July 26, 1947 she married Sgt. Joe Leone.  They spent the next 66 years together.  Most of her married life was spent living in Weymouth and Rockland, with occasional moves back to her hometown in Pennsylvania.  Olga was extremely proud of her Russian/Slovakian heritage.  She self-taught herself enough Russian to communicate during her travels to Russia.  Olga was a multi-talented, non-stop woman who excelled in everything she attempted, whether it was cooking, baking, flower arranging, scrimshaw, cake decorating, painting, ceramics, home decorating or whatever she set her mind to.  Her children are still wondering why none of those artistic genes got passed on to them. Beyond these talents, she was a loving, caring mother who worked hard to raise her three sons the “right way” and provide them the very best she could.  Each son is grateful for everything she did for them.  Beyond her own children, she was claimed as “Mom” and “Grandma” by others who knew and loved her.  The last few years of her life were very difficult for Olga.  Maladies slowed her active lifestyle to a standstill by taking away her ability to walk and to fully use her hands, both a curse to such a dynamic woman.  Throughout these difficult years, her husband was always there to take care of her.

Olga leaves behind her devoted husband Joe, her son Christopher and his wife Lee of Leominster, MA, her son Joseph and his wife Sheila of Sykesville, MD, her son Dale of Rockland, MA, and three grandchildren: Song Won, Joseph Jr., and Kimberly.  She also leaves behind her sister Lorraine Hampton of Monroeville, PA.  With her passing, the world now has a hole that can never be filled.  During her last few years, spent in a nursing facility, all she wanted was, to go home.  She’s finally going home.

Visitation will be held at the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home at 809 Main Street, South Weymouth on October 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.  No subsequent service is planned.

In lieu of flowers donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
