Norman F. Grossman

Grossman, Norman F. of Hingham, died March 21, 2017. He was 92.

Norman Grossman was born in Brookline, MA on August 9th, 1924. He was married to Natalie Kramer (also of Brookline) for 65 years.  They had five children: David (of Lunenburg, MA), Jeffrey (of Maine), Philip (of Boston), Eric (of Yarmouth) and Rachel (South Elgin, Illinois).  He leaves brother, George (87) and 1 nephew, and 2 nieces. Norman was a World War II Veteran who fought in the D Day invasion of 1944.  He spent 90 days on the battlefield and his service ended when he was wounded by a hand grenade. Although he made a full recovery, doctors could not remove all the shrapnel from his body. Norman was an active member of the 29th division. In 2014, he was awarded a Medal of Honor from France.

He was the eldest son of Helen Grossman. His original father, Norman Fischel, died of leukemia when Norman was young. Later, his mother Helen married Julius Grossman. Norman’s step father passed away in 1971. His family lived originally on Commonwealth Avenue in Chestnut Hill and then Buckminster Road in Brookline. After the World War II, Norman worked for Julius, who was a part owner of a jacket manufacturing company known as Congress Sportswear Company which made Maine Guide jackets. There was a sales office on Bedford Street and later on Lincoln Street, Boston and a factory in Bath, Maine. In 1960, Norman and his brother, George, bought the company from Julius and built a new factory. They sold the company in 1985. Norman attended Brookline High school and graduated in 1941. After the war he attended Brown University where he received a BA in History. Natalie and Norman raised their family in Newton Highlands, were members of Belmont County Club and Temple Israel of Boston.  Norman was president of Belmont Country Club. In 2008, Norman and Natalie sold their home on Nod Hill Road.  They moved to Linden Ponds. Natalie passed away in 2014. Norman had suffered from congenital heart failure. Norman saw his beloved Boston Red Sox win three World Series. He was an original season ticket holder of the New England Patriots and served as President of the Board of Trustees at Mass Bay Community College from 1983-1992.  In the 1980’s he worked for Coldwelll Banker as a real estate broker. In the 1990s he worked for Boston Showcase of Newton. He also volunteered for the Carroll Center for the Blind.

He is survived by all his children, their significant others, and 8 grandchildren: Tyler, Daniel, Benjamin, Sean, Shannon, Jessica, Rebecca and Emily.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service Monday, March 27th at 10 AM in the Linden Ponds Derby Clubhouse, 203 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA 02043. Burial in MA National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:45 PM.
