Norma Elizabeth Condito, a longtime resident of Hingham, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at the age of 97.
She was born in Danbury, CT to Teresa and Louis Butera. Norma grew up in Danbury and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Danbury High School. She worked for 2 years at Norden’s Bombsight during WWII before entering Danbury State Teachers College where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Shortly after graduating, she married Vincent Anthony Condito and moved to his hometown of Hingham where they would start a family and call home for the rest of their days.
Norma began her career as an elementary school teacher in Cohasset teaching first grade and later moving to the William L. Foster Elementary School (after the town of Hingham lifted the ban on married women being able to teach in their schools) where she taught third and fourth grades for the remainder of her career. Her love of teaching and caring for her students touched the lives of many.
After retiring, Norma spent her winters in Florida surrounded by her family and enjoying the Florida sun. She loved cooking large meals for the entire family, making her own pasta and many other Italian dishes. She enjoyed knitting and embroidery and was an avid reader, well versed on any topic of the day. She followed politics and participated in an investment club. She volunteered at Road to Recovery, coordinating rides for cancer patients. She was a member of the Sons of Italy. She traveled abroad with family many times to Italy, England, and Greece.
Norma was a devout woman of faith, attending St. Paul’s Parish in Hingham and Sacred Heart Parish in Lake Worth, FL. She passed on her faith to her children and always modeled her Christian values. Later in life she was a constant companion of her daughter, Carolyn, and never missed a daily phone call from her two sons, Vinny and David, who lived out of state. She loved sitting at Hingham Harbor with her coffee, having conversations and enjoying the beautiful seascape.
Norma had a profound love for her family and friends and the town of Hingham. She will be remembered for her independence and her kind and compassionate ways. She lived a remarkable life and was truly grateful for her many blessings. She was a gentle and beautiful soul who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Beloved wife of 36 years to the late Vincent Anthony Condito Sr. Devoted mother of the late Vincent Condito Jr. and his surviving wife, Sandi of Santa Clara, CA, Carolyn Condito Brewer and her husband Richard of Abington, and David Condito and his wife Michele of Cohasset, formerly of Lake Worth, FL. Loving sister to the late Louise Ciccone of Brookfield, CT, Dora Ehrhard of Danbury, CT, Diana Barchi of Danbury, CT, Aldo Butera of Lake Worth, FL and the late Carmine Butera of Lake Worth, FL. Cherished grandmother of Meagan, Michael, Krista, Theresa, Lynnette, and Diana. Also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Friday, May 19th, from 4-7 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Saturday, May 20th, prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Paul’s Church, Hingham at 10 AM. Cremation will follow.
