Nick Greggo

There are a lot of ways to describe Nick:  grease-monkey; gearhead; Lego-master; pain-in-the-ass; wicked smart; fixer of things mechanical or electronic (including his mom’s small appliances).  He was drawn like a magnet to anything that had wheels or an engine—the phrase “don’t touch that” wasn’t in his vocabulary.  A junkyard picker, Nick was a collector of orphaned auto-parts, near or far, big or small, because he “might need it someday”.   He loved fast cars and muddy trucks (especially if they were Chevy). Whether re-building a truck from the ground up, a computer from a box of haphazard parts, or even a working game system out of random Lego bricks, Nick was curious and always busy.

His love of taking things apart and putting them back together had been a lifelong skill, one that presented itself early.  One Christmas, when he was 5 years old, he spent three full days in his pajamas, refusing to get dressed until all the Lego sets he got from Santa were completed. As a child, any offers to “help” his younger brother to build his own Lego toys had to be denied, because Nick would end up doing the whole thing himself.  He had a talent for creating things (many will agree that some of his cars could be called “creations”) that was honed early on.  At nine years old (and with his dad’s supervision) he crafted a Christmas tree light “turner-on-er” (an electric junction box with a wall switch merged onto an extension cord) so that no one had to bend down to turn the tree lights on.  His family still uses it today.

Nick lived his life to the fullest and squeezed 25 hours out of every day.  He never followed the crowd or took the easy way out; from the time he could walk, he forged his own path on his own terms.  But no matter what situation Nick found himself in, good or bad, he was a charismatic, funny, and generous spirit who always seemed to make the best out of a bad situation, picking up many new friends along the way.  You could always count on him saying something like, “I’m helping a buddy today to work on his car.”

He will be sorely missed by all of us who loved him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital).
