Nancy Pegnam

Nancy Pegnam (Lukens), a cherished member of her community and a beacon of creativity and warmth, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2024, at the age of 94. She was the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Jean (Scatchard) Lukens. Nancy's life was a rich tapestry woven with love, art, and adventure. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Germantown, Pennsylvania, Nancy moved to Norwell when she was 18. A graduate of Germantown Friends School, she pursued her passion for art at Skidmore College, where she earned her degree and went on to inspire young minds as an art teacher in the Norwell Public Schools for 22 years. Her dedication to education and the arts left a lasting impression on her students and colleagues. Nancy was the beloved wife of the late Martin Pegnam, and together they shared a life filled with joy, laughter, and exploration. She was the loving mother of Stephen Wallace and his wife Laura, and Kristin Gubler and her husband Michael. Nancy's role as a grandmother was one of her greatest joys, cherishing every moment with her granddaughters Emma and Marisa Gubler. She is also survived by Martin's son Eric Pegnam, his wife Monique, his brother Stephen, and long-time loving companion, Joe Counter. Nancy was known for her athletic prowess, serving as co-captain of her high school field hockey team and later as an avid tennis player at the Hanover Swim and Tennis Club. Her love for the beach was a constant throughout her life, with a cottage on Plymouth Beach where she and Martin lived year round, despite the challenges. Nancy's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she and Martin ran Captain Jack's Ice Cream and the Bunk and Bagel bed and breakfast in the Plymouth area, creating a hub of community and sweetness for all who visited. Even in her later years, while residing at Linden Ponds, Nancy remained active and engaged, joining the Nancy Club and channeling her artistic talents into teaching art classes. Her zest for life was evident in everything she did, including her travels with Martin, which took them as far as Italy, a country they adored and lived in for a time. Nancy will be dearly missed.
