Mildred Mary MacIsaac of Peaks Island and Harpswell, Maine; formerly of North Quincy, MA passed away at the age of 105 on July 5, 2022 at her home on Peaks Island. She was one month shy of her 106th birthday.
She was the loving wife of George MacIsaac for 49 years who predeceased her in 1988. She was the beloved mother of 7 children: Douglas and his wife AnnMarie of Mexico, ME; Phyllis and her husband Fred O’Keefe of Peaks Island, ME; Donald and his wife Denise of Hyannis, MA; Linda and her husband John Prybylo of Harpswell, ME; Laura and her husband Terrence McCann of Harpswell, ME and Joanne and her partner Ronald DeLucia of Medford, MA. She is predeceased by her son Steven whose wife Kimberly resides on Peaks Island, ME. Millie is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Born Mildred Mary Hurlburt on August 3, 1916 in Dorchester MA she was the third oldest of 12 children and is survived by her sisters Helen Caldweld of Hingham, MA; Peggy Brack of Weymouth, MA and brother Walter of Arizona. The Hurlburt family participates in the “Long Life Family Study” conducted by the National Institute on Aging. The study follows families who maintain both physical and mental acuity into advanced age with a goal to determine which genetic, environmental and behavioral factors contribute to longevity. Millie and her siblings have been featured in both Time and Boston Magazines regarding their remarkable health and longevity.
Millie graduated from the High School of Practical Arts in 1933. She met her husband George at the Riverview Dance Hall in Dorchester. They were married two years later at St Brendan’s Church in Dorchester in 1939 and settled in North Quincy where they raised their family. Unusual for the times she started a career with Avon Products ultimately becoming a regional manager for the Boston/Dorchester area where she worked for over 20 years.
Although North Quincy was the primary family home she would spend summers at her cottage on beloved Peaks Island, ME. Peaks Island was her favorite place and she considered it a great summer if she never had to leave the island for the mainland. It became the center of family life where many family members still live, summer or vacation. Millie’s final summers during Covid was spent on her lawn every afternoon surrounded by family, friends and neighbors.
Once retired she and her husband spent winters in Nokomis, FL and she continued to winter there well into her 90’s after his death. She has spent her recent winter months in Harpswell, ME residing with her daughters until she would return to Peaks Island.
She is remembered by her children as being a loving, devoted wife and mother but also one who encouraged her children to be independent. She took joy in our successes and encouraged our adventures.
There is a saying that we should strive to live an ordinary life in an extraordinary way. Millie certainly lived a long, happy and extraordinary life.
