Mildred L. “Millie” (Cummings) Mcdonald

Mildred L. “Millie” McDonald (Cummings), age 92, of Hingham and formerly of Weymouth passed away peacefully the morning of February 15, 2019 in Hingham. The daughter of the late Daniel and Helen Cummings, Millie was born in Boston then raised and educated in Weymouth, also graduating from Emmanuel College and New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences. She married her beloved husband and business partner, George L. McDonald Sr., in 1946 when he returned from his military service following WWII.

Millie and George settled in their hometown of Weymouth and started a family together. Although the McDonald family had been in the funeral industry since 1911 out of George’s family home, Millie and George decided to move forward expanding in order to serve more local families. They purchased the Clapp Shoe Estate located at the corner of Charles and Middle Streets in 1946 then opened the first standalone McDonald Funeral Home.

Millie and George worked hard together building the reputation of their funeral service and in 1960 opened the McDonald Funeral Home South Weymouth location on Rt. 18. The only thing that Millie was more proud of than her and her husband’s work together, was watching her four sons take lead on further expansion of another funeral home in North Weymouth allowing them to serve more local families than ever before.

Millie retired to Hingham in 1986 and has since enjoyed many years of golf, tennis, traveling, and most importantly making such amazing friends at her condo in The Meadows and later at Linden Ponds. She was very social and enjoyed her status as a pioneer and member of the Linden Ponds Welcoming Committee. Millie also wintered in Naples, FL for many years. She will be remembered for the hard work she exemplified year after year laying a foundation of success and good will for future generations of her family.

Millie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 40 years George L. McDonald Sr. She is the loving mother of Joseph McDonald and his wife Leslie of Weymouth, Robert McDonald and his wife Mary Lou of Weymouth, Richard McDonald and his wife June of Weymouth, Patricia Haley and her husband William of Whitman, George McDonald Jr. and his wife Laurie of Wolfeboro, NH, and the late Charleen Langley-Brennan. Millie is also a proud grandmother of 16 and is survived by many great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours for Millie on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 4-7pm in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH Weymouth located at 809 Main St. (Rt. 18 opp. South Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:30am on Thursday for a Celebration of Life prior to the Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church in Weymouth at 10:30am. Burial will immediately follow in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Millie’s name to the Home for Little Wanderers at 10 Guest Street, Boston, MA 02135.
