Michael D. Hurley

Hurley, Michael D. of Hull, 86, originally of South Boston, died June 6, 2014.  

Loving husband of AnnMarie (McDonough Burke).  Married 33 years, they lived first in Braintree and then in Hull.  He leaves stepdaughters Shannon Marie Burke of Hull, Kristin Ann Son of Braintree and Margret-Mary Carney of Hull as well as their children, the late Quartermaster Michael James Burke-Lally, USN and Madison Margret Kelley, both of Hull.  He also leaves two sons-in-law, Robert Son and Brian Carney, and his granddaughter Madison’s father, Terence Kelley. 

Michael also leaves family from two previous marriages, his first wife Mary and their five daughters and one son:  Jean Carter and Denise Carr of South Boston, Marianne Gallagher of Hanover, Diane of Florida–who gave him much joy with her phone calls, especially during his illness–and Michelle and Michael D. Hurley, Jr. of South Boston.  He was stepfather to his late wife Louise’s daughter Gail Scammon of Webster, New Hampshire.  He leaves behind his brother John J. “Wacko” Hurley and his wife Molly of South Boston, and many good friends, in particular Ed “Butch” Shifflett of Braintree and Robert Wallace of Weymouth and their wives Jean and Joan.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. 

Michael was a WWII Navy Seaman First Class, assigned to the N.T.C., Sampson, N.Y., the U.S. Medea, AKA 31, which was assigned to the Pacific area during WWII and the USS Hector AR #7; his service medals were the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, 1 Star, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the Army of Occupation medal.  His ship was in the first convoy to be in Tokyo Harbor the morning the Peace Treaty was signed September 2nd, 1945. 

He was a disabled veteran, with service-connected disabilities for asbestos exposure and hearing loss and as a disabled veteran was active for many years with the Disabled American Veterans chapters in South Boston and Randolph as well as being State Commander of the Massachusetts Department for the 1975-76 year.  He served the Department as a member of the State Finance Committee for many years, and he was often appointed to National Offices of the DAV by national commanders of the organization.  In 1979, he was appointed by the National Commander to be the National Officer of the Day for the first and only National Convention held in Boston, and during his service to the DAV, he received many awards and citations.  In all his years of membership, – he first joined after returning from his military service because his parents were active in the organization – he never missed attending a State Convention until last year when he was hospitalized.  He also served as commander of Post 400 of the American Legion, the Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post 561 VFW, and South Boston Chapter 22 DAV. 

He retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts after 36 years, employed mostly as a police officer, first with the State Department of the Public Works which became the Capitol Police and later was transferred into the State Police.  He retired in 1984.  After 3 weeks off, he started working for Randolph Memorial Chapter 39 DAV and retired from that after 25 years. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Thursday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull at 10 AM.  Burial in Hull Village Cemetery where his grandson Michael James rests in peace.
