Melvia S. “Mel” Sears

Sears, Melvia S. (Peckham) of Quincy, died October 14, 2016.  

Melvia was a graduate of North Quincy High School class of 1939. She later continued on to get her college degree from Burdette College. Mrs. Sears worked as an executive secretary for 30 years at South Shore Mental Health Center before her retirement. Previously, she had worked for B.F. Goodrich Tire Service for 5 years. She was an active and lifetime member of The Quincy Community United Methodist Church and was also a member of Sigma Phi for many years.  At her former residence, 45 School Street, Quincy, Melvia made many loving friends and played several card games on a weekly basis.  She loved to play cribbage and was involved in cribbage tournaments.  Melvia loved playing a nickel game and would play with anyone who was interested.  She loved doing crosswords and word search puzzles until she was no longer able.  Melvia also loved playing bingo and continued to play until a couple of weeks ago.  Melvia will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Daughter of the late Marion Thompson and John Sloop of Texas. Spouse of the late Everett Peckham Jr. and the late Ralph Sears. Cherished mother to Janet McGonigle and her husband Barry, Nancy Valorz and her husband Peter, step daughter Janice Kranz and her husband Doug and the late Barbara Longuemare. Loving sister to Janice Tibbetts and her husband Arthur. Dear stepmother to the late Lori (Sears) Munn. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. 

Melvia enjoyed her time at Sunrise Senior Living in Braintree.  The staff and administrators were all involved in the great care given to her during her time there.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral service in The Quincy Community United Methodist Church at 11 AM.  Burial at Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton. 

Donations in memory of Melvia may be made to Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley Street, W. Bridgewater, MA 02379-1022 or to The Quincy Community United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 40 Beale Street, Quincy MA 02170.
