Maurice Cooper, 88, of Abington, MA, passed away peacefully New Year’s Day 2018, surrounded by his family and loved ones, at the home of his son, Maurice Cooper, Jr., in Nazareth PA after his battle with super nuclear palsy.
Maurice was born on June 18, 1929 in a tent in Peabody, MA and named after the doctor that delivered him. He was the youngest of 11 children. His parents George Washington and Patience Cooper pre-deceased him along with all of his siblings James “Jimmy” Norton, John “Jack” Peabody, Ace, Lily, Phoebe, Richard “Richie”, Nelson, Henry, Virginia and William. As a child of the Depression, Maurice quit the third grade and began working to help support his family. He was a smart and hardworking man and proved so by starting his own business, Maurice’s Paving. He paved the way for generations to come. Finally retiring comfortably at the age of 78, Maurice left behind a legacy of work ethic. On August 23, 1950 Maurice met and married the love of his life, Carrie Elizabeth Stanley, all in the same day. Together they had six children, Carol Theresa, Lenny Meek, Steve Meek, Catherine “Cathy” Theresa Hellige, John “Jack” Maurice Cooper, and Maurice Cooper Jr. His wife and son Jack pre-deceased him. Maurice is survived by his daughter Kathy, his son Maurice and his wife Sandra Dee, his daughter Carol, his son Steve, his son Lenny and his wife Maggie, and also the wives of his late son Jack, Honey Cooper, Doris Young, and Maria Cooper.
He is survived by many grandchildren: Penny Maria Cooper, Denise Maria Cooper, John “Jackie” Maurice and Trisha Cooper, Alexander Howard and Phoebe Cooper, Charlene Myers, Tommy and Helen Ferrara, Adam and Susan Hellige, Robert and Carrie Ann Lehtonen, Maurice and Melissa Ann Cooper, Harry James and Victoria Cooper, Levi Frank and Amanda Lynn Padin, Andrew William and Nation Ann Cooper. Then there is all of their children Maurice leaves behind 30 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren, with one more on the way from his great granddaughter Kirsten Ann Lehtonen and Victor Cimino. Maurice is also survived by countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A brief funeral service will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 AM in the funeral home followed by burial in Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave., Jamaica Plain, MA.
