Maureen F. Murphy

Maureen F. Murphy, a beloved community figure and cherished family member, passed away on February 25, 2025 with her family by her side, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and unwavering dedication to her community. She was 79. Born Maureen Cobb, she proudly grew up in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, where she attended Mission Church and Mission School, nurturing her strong values and commitment to family.

Maureen, alongside her husband, co-founded Murphy Brothers Volkswagen in Quincy and Weymouth, a venture that exemplified her tenacity and attention to detail. Before the founding of Murphy Brothers, she began her professional journey at MassPort in Boston where she managed the office on the top of the Tobin Bridge.

A woman of principle and compassion, Maureen was often described as a “moral compass”. Friends, family, and even her children's friends turned to her for advice, revealing the deep respect and affection others held for her. She was known for being an honorary mother to many young people in her life, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear.

Maureen's passions were many, and her commitment to community service was paramount. She was a trailblazer becoming the first woman president of the Weymouth Lions Club, an organization dedicated to fighting blindness. This was a cause close to her heart as Maureen was diagnosed in her early 20s with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a hereditary eye disease for which there is no cure. Retinitis Pigmentosa slowly takes away your eyesight but in spite of that, she led this organization and its many charitable endeavors to help others. Additionally, she was actively involved at Sacred Heart School and St. Francis Xavier School in Weymouth and she served as a longtime CCD teacher at St. Albert the Great Church in Weymouth, imparting her faith and values to the next generation. Her political engagement was notable; she was a member of the League of Women Voters, active in town politics and proudly ran her son's first campaign for State Representative.

Her gift for expression shone through her writings as well. Maureen was a writer for the Weymouth News and Weymouth Journal, where her heartfelt columns "From the Heart” and “In The Spirit” resonated with readers and highlighted her values.

Maureen's life was richly woven around family and faith, which were the cornerstone of her existence. She leaves behind countless cherished memories among those who were fortunate to know her. Her spirit and wisdom will continue to guide her family and friends, who will surely feel her presence in their lives.

Family, friends, and all whose lives Maureen touched are invited to gather to celebrate her remarkable life and the legacy of love she is leaving behind at a Funeral Mass to be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Noon, at St. Albert the Great Church, 1140 Washington Street in Weymouth. Burial immediately following in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.

She was the beloved wife of 58 years to James Murphy of Weymouth and Milltown County Kerry Ireland. Loving mother of Weymouth State Representative James Murphy and his wife Mary Ann of Weymouth; and Heather Murphy Engren and her partner Larry of Weymouth. Proud "Nanny" of Jacob Engren, Tyler Engren, Maeve Murphy, and Liam Murphy. Loving sister of Kathleen Gibbons and her husband Terrence of Weymouth. Predeceased by her brother Richard Cobb and his wife Kathleen of Braintree. Daughter of the late Martin and Kathleen Cobb. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Maureen may be made to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, c/o Chief Financial Officer, 600 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02111.
