Maureen F. (O’Connell) Schaffner of Abington, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home on November 2, 2017.
Born in 1942, raised in Hyde Park, graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1960 and attended Boston State College.
Sweet, loving wife and best friend for almost 55 years to husband John K. Schaffner, Jr. and mother to daughters Kristen M. Schaffner and Kimberly S. Schaffner.
Beloved daughter of the late Frances Lila and Thomas O’ Connell; dear sister of Thomas “Sunny” O’Connell, Jr. and his wife Mary and of Lyla Collins and husband Hugh “Red” Collins. In addition, survived by several generations of cherished nieces and nephews.
Also, the sister-in-law of Hedda M. Schaffner and the late Barbara Schaffner and adored daughter-in-law of the late Hedda and John Schaffner Sr.
Doting grandmother of her treasured grand-dog, the late, “Georgi Girl”.
An embraced member of a very small select inner-circle of life-long friends who are there for each other.
Special thanks to those health aides and nurses of Beacon Hospice who attended to her care, at home this past year.
In the course of her professional career, some of her appointed positions were the Tenant Representative on the 5-member Board of Commissioners at the Boston Housing Authority, The Director of The Boston Police Department’s Bureau of Research and Development and the Commissioner of Elderly Affairs for the City of Boston during which she instituted the “Meals on Wheels” Program.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Thursday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in St. Bridget’s Church, Abington at 9 AM on Friday. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maureen’s memory can be made to: Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, 72 River Park St. #202, Needham, MA 02494. These contributions would be sincerely appreciated.
