Cahalan, Matthew of Quincy, died on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Quincy Medical Center. The beloved husband of Eileen (O’Donnell) Cahalan. Loving father of Frances M. Smith and her husband Edward of Randolph and Daniel T. Cahalan and his wife Judy of Quincy. Brother of Denis Cahalan of West Roxbury, Thomas Cahalan and Lena Cavanagh both of Ireland and the late Mary Madigan, Margaret O’Brien, Josie Cahalan and Kate Cavanagh. Grampy of Terry Panameno and her husband Henri, Brian Smith, Christine, Gregory and Steven Cahalan. Mr. Cahalan is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Matthew was born in Killaloe, Ireland and received his naturalization papers on March 4, 1950. He spent many years in Dorchester before moving to Quincy 40 years ago. Matthew worked as a brakeman for the New Haven railroad – currently called Conrail, for 30 years retiring back in 1979. He enjoyed hurling and gardening. A past member of the Castle Island Association, he enjoyed his daily trips to Castle Island to visit his many friends who also enjoyed the same daily routine. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours Tuesday 2 -4 & 7-9pm in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock Street, QUINCY. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15AM on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 prior to the Funeral Mass in Saint Ann’s Church, Wollaston at 10 AM. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery , Quincy. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Cahalan may be made to St. Anthony’s Shine, 100 Arch St. Boston, MA 02110 .
