Mary T. Lawless

Mary T. Lawless (nee O’Brien) of Hingham MA, formerly Weymouth, died on May 30, 2021. She was 94.

She is predeceased by her husband, James “Jimmy” Lawless, daughters Diane Phillips and Patricia Lawless, and her granddaughter Stephanie Phillips. She is preceded in death by her siblings John J. O’Brien, James O’Brien, Patrick O’Brien, Helen Sullivan, William O’Brien, Barbara (Bernie) Norton, and Thomas (Timothy) O’Brien, and her son-in-law Robert Ernst. She is survived by her sister Margaret Coletta, and by her children, John Lawless (Deborah Lawless), Virginia Lawless (John Wooten), Jeanne Ernst and Marianne Kocher (David Kocher). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kiel Phillips, Sarah Lawless, Matthew Wooten (Melissa), Allison Wooten, Deirdre Caulfield (Aaron), Elizabeth Kocher and James Kocher. Also survived by her great-grandchildren, Layce Phillips, Anthony “AJ” Tantillo, and Kyra, Kellan and Kelcie Caulfield.

Mary was born and raised in Dorchester (St. Margaret’s parish), MA, graduating from Girls High School, class of 1944. She volunteered to join the United States Cadet Nurse Corps at Carney Hospital Training School for Nurses, graduating 1947 and did much of her training and service in Baltimore Md. during World War II. On completing her commitments to the Cadet Nurse Service, Mary lived and worked in Dorchester area where she met and married Jimmy, eventually moving to Weymouth after room and nerves ran short in the triple decker. She practiced nursing full time, while raising their six children, and continued her career until she retired at the age of 74 years. Mary loved her extended family first and foremost and cared for many of them during their final days. Mary also kept very busy gardening, knitting, sewing, or quilting, rug braiding, and donating her time and piecework to many causes. She loved her travels with her sisters and friends, taking trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Ireland and Florida, amongst others.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 9:00 AM on Wednesday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 10 AM. Burial in MA National Cemetery, Bourne will be at 2:00 PM.
