Mary Shurtluff (nee Jubenski), aged 92, died December 14, 2024 at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. A longtime resident of Quincy and Vero Beach, Florida, Mary lived a long and fruitful life devoted to her 8 children and their spouses: Kenneth Jr. and Nerrissa Shurtluff of Quincy; Kathy and Fred Bolm of Vero Beach; Karen Shurtluff of Orlando, Florida; Kristen and Mike Bishop of Apopka, Florida; Kimberly Chase of Orlando; Karyl and Steve Elias of Nashua, New Hampshire; Kevin Shurtluff and Willow LeTellier of Seattle, Washington; and Kerry and Mark Wilkie of Vero Beach. She was a doting grandmother to her 5 grandchildren: Lowell, Liam, Olivia, Nolan and Jenna. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth William (Ken) Shurtluff, Sr. in 1997.
Mary grew up in Hunter and Trevorton, Pennsylvania and trained to be a secretary. After moving to New York City to join her older sister, Olga, Mary met her future husband while volunteering at a local USO. They were married in 1954. Mary and Ken lived for a time in Queens, New York, later moving to Keene, New Hampshire, finally settling in Quincy in 1960. During her time in Quincy, Mary raised her large family first in Montclair and later in Wollaston. She was an accomplished seamstress, played the accordion, and enjoyed gardening. After her children, all of whom attended North Quincy High School, graduated, she began a long career as a secretary and bookkeeper for a variety of local firms, both in Quincy and Vero Beach.
In 1986 Mary and Ken moved to Vero Beach, where she resided until 2022. She was a communicant at Saint Helen’s Church and sang in the church choir for many years. She also learned to play and become proficient at the organ. As she aged, she split time between family homes in Vero Beach, Apopka, and Quincy.
Mary loved to play cards, watch detective shows, and spend time with family and friends. The Catholic faith was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with members of her congregation in Vero Beach. She was a jokester who got a kick of generating guffaws from her listeners with puns. Her kind, loving and generous spirit will be greatly missed.
Funeral arrangements will be provided by Keohane Funeral Home in Quincy. A Mass of Christian Faith will be held at St. Helen’s Church in Vero Beach at a later date. Donations may be made in Mary’s name to a charity of your choice.
