Mary A. Mitchelson

Mitchelson, Mary A. (Foley) of Hingham formerly of Weymouth, passed away on November 12, 2024 surrounded by her family, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. She was 80 years old.

Loving wife of 56 years to William (“Bill”) Mitchelson of Hingham. Cherished mother to her four children: Timothy and his wife Jennifer of Hanover, Mark and his wife Hannah of Marshfield, Maura of Braintree, and Julie Brown and her husband Jeffrey of Foxboro. Devoted grandmother to Jack, Brendan, Delaney, Alexander, Charles and Gavin Mitchelson and Ryan, Griffin, Thomas and Callum Brown. Adoring sister to John Foley, Joanne Bachelder, and Jean Steuterman and beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her godson Matthew Steuterman and her grandson Aidan Brown.

Mary was born in Medford on November 10, 1944, to John and Marjorie Foley. A proud graduate of Medford High School, Mary's early career as a legal secretary at the law firm of Zamparelli & White showcased her sharp intellect and meticulous attention to detail. On July 6, 1968, Mary married the love of her life, Bill, and they eventually settled in Weymouth where they raised their four children. Mary embraced the role of a loving wife and mother with open arms. Her home was a hub of hospitality, especially on Cape Cod, where many cherished Thanksgivings and summer weekends were spent creating memories that would be treasured for generations. In their spare time, Mary and Bill enjoyed traveling on cruises and trips to Europe and the Caribbean. When her children reached school age, Mary’s gentle guidance and support touched the lives of many students as a teacher's aide in the Quincy public school system under the wing of her beloved friend, the late Anne Marie Zukauskas.

In 2002, Mary began devoting her life to being a cherished grandmother. Known lovingly as Gram or Gaga, nothing brought Mary more joy than her ten grandchildren. As patient as she was kind, Mary was generous with both her time and affection. She loved beyond compare and without condition and her gentle way made each of them feel as if they were her favorite. Her grandchildren were the center of her world, and she was theirs.

Mary was unfailingly thoughtful, caring and kind to everyone she knew. In her quiet and understated way, she made a lasting impression on all those who were fortunate enough to be in her company, whether it be for 5 minutes or 50 years. Mary was a devout Catholic with tremendous and unwavering faith who lived her life through both acts of service and acts of kindness. The world is a better place for having had Mary in it. She will be profoundly missed.

The Mitchelson family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff of Linden Ponds and the Norwell VNA for the care and support shown to Mary over the course of her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the memory of George-Levi Njuguna, the son of Mary’s long-time caregiver, Rose, at https://gofund.me/eb65ac20

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Burial will be private. See www.Keohane.com for directions and online condolences.
