Mary E. (Royds) Sutherland, a Hingham resident for 64 years and formerly of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on December 19, 2018. She was 93.
Born in Boston, she was raised in Hyde Park and was the daughter of the late Fred and Caroline (Schneider) Royds. She attended local schools and graduated from Hyde Park High School with the Class of 1943.
Mary was often refereed to as Smiling Mary and Mary Sunshine. She was a happy person and people enjoyed her company. In her spare time, Mary enjoyed playing card games and Bingo. She often had her friends over to the house for card game parties. Mary enjoyed traveling with her husband Ralph T. They loved spending the Winters in Sunrise, Florida and cultivated many long lasting friendships throughout the years. Mary was an active member of the VFW, American Legion and the Hull Senior Citizens Center. A generous person, Mary donated to many different charitable organizations. Animals had a special spot in her heart, so she often made contributions to the M.S.P.C.A.
A homemaker, Mary raised her family with love and devotion. She was a caring, loving, and selfless woman who modeled her life around the virtues of faith, hope and love. Mary’s legacy of good character, strong morals and values continue through her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late Ralph T. Sutherland, who passed away on December 19, 2002. Together they shared many loving years of marriage. She was the devoted mother of Barbara Darling and her husband Michael of Hingham, Karen Conway and her husband Arthur of Wilmington, North Carolina and formerly of Hull and Leslie “Sassy” Sutherland of Hull. Mary was the loving grandmother of Lisa Hinckley her husband Stephen of Hingham and Christopher and Michael Darling, Jason Conway and his wife Janna and Kelly Conway, all of Wilmington, North Carolina, and the loving great grandmother of seven. Mary was the dear sister of Margaret Kibler of Hyde Park and the dear sister-in-law of Fred Grenier of Hyde Park. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her dear sister, Bertha Grenier.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Wednesday, December 26th 4-8 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 8:30 AM on Thursday, December 27th, prior to the funeral service in Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, Hingham at 9:30 AM. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary may be made to Amedisys Foundation, 3854 American Legion Way, Suite A, Baton Rouge, LA 70816.
Mary’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Beacon Hospice and the Harbor House Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, for all their loving care, kindness and support.
