Mary C. (Ford) Madden

Mary Catherine (Ford) Madden died peacefully on January 5, 2023, with her family at her side. She was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1927, in her beloved Dorchester / Lower Mills community. She was a true example of this country’s “Greatest Generation”. Her inner light and her smile would brighten any room she entered.  As a young woman, she enjoyed going to dances and spending time with girlfriends and would often reminisce of the fun she had with them.

She lived in several places during her lifetime. Mary owned many residencies in Weymouth and Rockland. In her later years she was a proficient “snowbird” travelling between her Cape Cod waterfront cottage in Marston Mills and her getaway home in Barefoot Bay, Florida to escape the New England winters.

Mary was predeceased by her Irish Immigrant parents, Dennis Ford and Mary (Lally) Ford, her brothers Joe, John, and Rob. She is survived by her daughters Mary Marani & son-in-law Joe Marani and Sheila Madden, all of Hanover. Mary is also survived by three sons, Stephen Madden of Douglas, David Madden & son-in-law Paul Bagley of Marshfield, Timothy Madden of Braintree, and her daughter in law, Cheryl Cain of Weymouth. Her tireless care of her husband, Daniel F. Madden and son, Daniel A. Madden during their illnesses and eventual passing was a true expression of unselfish determination and love. She is the proud grandmother to seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mary worked at Polaroid Corporation for over 15 years. She valued this time spent working her way up to Executive Assistant.  She left this position in 1988 to begin a new adventure. She lived her life to the fullest, travelling around the world in her retirement years to such places as the Great wall of China and the Great Barrier Reef. She loved to line dance and listen to Irish music. Her favorite entertainer was Andy Cooney. A devoted fan, she followed him from venue to venue with her very close sister-in-law, Marie Gould.

She embraced the joys of life and didn’t waste a minute of it. Her life was one of creativity, a true artist. She created amazing, braided woolen rugs and landscape oil paintings during her later years. Her paintings expressed the beauty she saw in the world and which she shared with all of us.
