Martin F. Lydon

Martin F. (Marty or Pa) Lydon, of Weymouth, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family at South Shore Hospital following a brief illness on January 27, 2015 at the age of 94.

Martin was born and raised in Dorchester and attended Boston English High School.  He honored his country by serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945. Following the war’s end, Martin worked for the US Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1980 as superintendent of the Kenmore Square Post Office.  After retiring from the Post Office, he worked as mailroom supervisor at Boston Financial Data Services in Quincy until 1989.

Martin moved with his wife, daughter, and her family to South Weymouth in 1987 where the entire family shared a home together.  During retirement, Martin enjoyed golf, working around the house and the yard, playing Bingo, and spending time with his wife Mary, the love of his life, and his daughter Michele, son-in-law Mark, and his 2 wonderful grandchildren, Martin and Meghan.  Martin had an infectious joy for life, a wonderful smile, and a great sense of humor – he was loved by all who knew him.

Martin is the beloved husband of the late Mary E. (Gormley) Lydon.  Martin and Mary were married for 60 years.  

Martin is survived by his loving daughter Michele Prendergast, her husband Mark, his grandson Martin and his wife Kate, his granddaughter Meghan Prendergast, his great-grandchildren Owen and Olivia, his sister Rita Gill of Milton, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Friday 4-8 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital)  Relatives and friends will gather in the funeral home at 10 AM on Saturday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church, Weymouth at 11 AM. Burial in Milton Cemetery, Milton.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Martin may be made to Alzheimers Assn., MA Chapter, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
