Mark G. Mahoney, passed away suddenly at his home on October 3, 2024, at the age of 67. He was born on December 7, 1956, in Boston. He previously lived in Quincy and Mattapan. He attended Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury, class of 1974. Mark's professional journey began at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, from which he graduated in 1978, with the knowledge and skills that propelled him into a distinguished 22-year career in the Merchant Marines. Beginning in 1978 he was a Deck Officer and eventually a Captain of tankers, bulk ships and container ships with the Masters, Mates and Pilots Union. He traveled on many domestic and international voyages. Throughout his time on the water, he navigated the seas, experiencing the beauty and challenges of maritime life.
After his retirement from the Merchant Marines, Mark started a job as a bus driver for the Weymouth Public School system. This was a job he loved. He truly enjoyed his time there and made many wonderful friends. His commitment to the younger generations was evident in his volunteer work many summers with the Weymouth Junior Police Academy.
Mark is survived by his brother, Michael F. Mahoney, and his wife Rita of Braintree, Beloved uncle of Patrick Ryan Mahoney and his wife Ingrid of Springfield, VA, Brian Matthew Mahoney and his partner Chiara Russo of Medford, and his niece, Shannon Elizabeth Mahoney of Lahaina, Maui, HI. Cherished great-uncle to Bridget Paige Mahoney and Hailey Ryan Mahoney.
He was preceded in death by his father, Francis L. Mahoney, and his mother, Madeline Mahoney. Mark's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who loved him. He was blessed with many wonderful friends and caring neighbors.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday October 15th from 4-7 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home South Weymouth at 809 Main Street (Route 18 opp. So. Shore Hospital). A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Wednesday October 16th prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Clare’s Church, Braintree at 10 AM. Burial will in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
