Marjorie V (Lynch) Murphy, 91, of Braintree, died peacefully Friday, July 5th, surrounded by her loving family. Marjorie was the daughter of hardworking Irish immigrants, John and Margaret (Crowley) Lynch from whom she learned the values of faith, hard work, loyalty, resilience and the love of all things Irish.
Predeceased in life by her husband of 48 years, Jack Murphy, brothers James “Rocky” Lynch, Charles Lynch, John “Sonny” Lynch, and brother in law Jim Sullivan, three sisters in law, Christine Lynch, Susan Lynch and Alice Lynch.
Marjorie is survived by her children who loved and respected her, John, Maura (Jim Burke), Kerin “Kerry” and Christopher, all of Braintree. Adored and admired by her six grandchildren: Neil (Kaleigh), Colleen (Paul Oldham), Meghan, Katie Dougherty, Bridget and Christine Burke and a soon to arrive great grandchild who will come to know and love her through all of us.
Marjorie is also survived by her revered older brother George F. Lynch, and her two sisters and best friends, Jeannette Lynch and Joan Sullivan, as well as her loving sister-in-law Marlene Lynch, dozens of nieces, nephews and their families.
Born in Brookline, Marjorie was a graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Framingham Teachers College and received a Master’s Degree from the Boston College Lynch Graduate School of Education. Marjorie was a member of the first graduating class that accepted women. Later in life, she completed a Certificate Program in Gerontology at the University of Massachusetts at Boston where she helped many senior citizens navigate the state pension system.
Marjorie began her teaching career in Randolph Public Schools where she taught fourth grade alongside the dashing 6th grade teacher who later became her husband. When her children were a bit older, Marjorie returned to work in the Special Education Department of the Braintree Public Schools as a home/hospital educator. It was in this role that she was able to create a classroom wherever the student was and positively impact students and families at their most vulnerable time. She assisted hundreds of students to complete school work, regain confidence and return to school when able.
While raising her family in Braintree, Marjorie enjoyed participating in community activities. She especially enjoyed being a Lector and Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church as well as attending all of her grandchildren’s athletic events, theater productions, concerts, graduations and all the moments in between. Marjorie helped establish a religious education program for children with special needs. She found great joy and satisfaction in creating these opportunities for those who not yet had access.
During the last few years of her life, alongside her family, Marjorie had the loving care of a tremendous group of women who began as aides and soon became family.
There is a quote from Pope Francis and it could describe how Marjorie lived her life: "Let us care for one another and let us be loving custodians of all. We all have the duty to do good. We will never be disillusioned or lose our way if we are guided by God. We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love, and be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace."
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Sunday from 3-6 PM in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home SOUTH WEYMOUTH at 809 Main Street (Rte 18 opp. So.
