Marjorie A. Gavin

GAVIN, Marjorie A. (McCauley) of South Weymouth, MA, passed away in her home of more than 50 years on October 14, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was a woman of strong faith, brave actions, and a courageous role model.

Daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Martha G. McCauley, Marjorie was born on June 3, 1935. She grew up in Allston, MA with her five siblings.

Marjorie married William (Bill) P. Gavin II in 1959.  Together they had six children: Maura, Sheila, William P. Gavin III, Christopher, Eileen and Kathleen. Marjorie and Bill settled in South Weymouth and became cherished members of the St. Francis Xavier Parish and the Pond Plain Improvement Association.

In January of 1979, Bill was killed in a car accident. With unwavering courage and strength and a strong support system, Marjorie moved forward as a single mother and provider. She spent the majority of her working career at the MA State Department of Social Services (DSS), where she stayed until retirement. Marjorie loved her DSS family and offered solace to many overwhelmed young social workers who sought out her quiet guidance. Her compassion for children who had been abused or abandoned included prayer and empathy for those who inflicted the harm. Marjorie volunteered for the Dianna DaVanna Center hotline, delivered Meals on Wheels, and raised money for numerous other charities, including the American Diabetes Association, and American Heart Association.

Marjorie’s favorite role was Grandmother or “Gram” to her six Grandchildren: James, Gavin, Owen, Selena, Billy and Christopher.

Marjorie enjoyed numerous close relationships with her large family including many nieces and nephews, great neighbors and wonderful friends. She was especially blessed by life-long friendships with Kitty (McLaughlin) and Ron Smith.

Her family wishes to thank all her caregivers from South Shore Elder Services and Norwell Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Marjorie’s Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 12, 2022 in St. Francis Xavier Parish, 234 Pleasant Street, South Weymouth, MA at 10 AM. Burial will be private.
