Galvin, Marie S. (Schumb) of Chicago died December 6, 2022, at the age of 91.
Born in Milton, MA, Marie graduated from Simmons College with a Bachelor’s in Library Science. After graduation, she worked for over nine years as a reference librarian at Boston University. Here she met her husband, Thomas J. Galvin, to whom she was married for forty-seven years until his death in 2004.
She was also predeceased by her sister, Carolyn Porteus, in 2018. Marie is survived by her daughter, Siobhan Wee (late Don) of Evanston, IL and grandson Thomas Wee of Brooklyn, NY. She is also survived by her nephew, Richard Porteus Jr., her nieces Karen Kidder and Susan Nedelman, and six grand-nieces and nephews: George and Emma Porteus, Marissa and Jameson Kidder, and Lucy and Sophia Nedelman.
Marie was a curious, lively woman with a wide range of interests from sports to politics to current events. She could find a common area of interest with anybody in every conversation. She was an avid reader, especially enjoying mysteries (she often remarked being a reference librarian required many of the same skills as solving a mystery). Marie was deeply devoted to her family and friends; she was unfailingly generous with her time, always ready to help her loved ones with whatever was needed, whenever it was needed, no matter the day or time.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Saturday from 9-10:30 AM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., Quincy prior to the funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, Quincy at 11 AM. Burial in Milton Cemetery, Milton. A memorial service to celebrate Marie’s life will also be held in Chicago at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marie’s memory can be made to the Thomas J. Galvin Endowed Scholarship Fund, Simmons University, 300 The Fenway, Boston, MA, 02115.
