Marie (Maria) Monterosso Bak

Marie (Maria) Monterosso Bak, 97, of Hingham passed away on November 17, 2023, after a short stay at the Pat Roche Hospice.  Marie was born in New Britain, CT, the daughter of Sicilian immigrants Angelina (Arangio) and Francesco Monterosso, and the younger sister of the late Anthony Monterosso, Esq.

Marie leaves her daughter, Marcia Buccitelli, a long-time local attorney, and her son-in-law, Anthony, of Hingham; three grandchildren and their spouses, Anthony Bak Buccitelli and his wife, Wenhong Luo, of Lanc

aster, PA, Bianca M. Hagan and her husband, George Nana Hagan, of Cranbury, NJ and Nicole M. Grosner and her husband, Erich Grosner, of Concord, MA; and six great-grandchildren August, Amissah, Ajube, Esi, Lucian and Angelo.

Marie was the wife of the late Dr. Alfred J. Bak and the mother of the late Alfred J. Bak, Jr. (Fred).

For the last seven months of her life, Marie was cared for by her daughter Marcia and her husband at their home in Hingham. From 2006 until that time, Marie lived at Linden Ponds under Marcia’s watchful eye.

In the mid-1940s, Marie attended the University of Connecticut where she met her future husband Al, a returning GI, while they were both waiting in line at the UConn bookstore. They were married in 1948.

Following their marriage, Marie worked in the local Selective Service Office, while her husband attended dental school. Later in life, she worked as the manager of her husband’s dental office in Ansonia, CT.

Marie and Al were avid and accomplished golfers. They were founding members of Bronson Country Club in Shelton, CT, and for many years often golfed there together several times a week. Both Marie and Al shot holes-in-one during their playing days, as did their son, Fred, a feat of which they all were justifiably proud.

Marie and Al were also enthusiastic gardeners who specialized in growing many species of small cacti and other unusual plants in their greenhouse.

They spent many summer vacations on Cape Cod with their children, always leaving from their home in Seymour, Connecticut before dawn “to beat the traffic “. They also especially enjoyed their trip to Bermuda with their children, and their 30th wedding anniversary trip to Hawaii.

Marie was an intelligent and strong-willed woman who endured several significant adversities during her life and weathered though them. She carried those qualities with her through her final days. We hope that God now grants her the love and peace that she deserves.

Marie’s funeral services were held privately on November 27th.  She was interned on November 28th next to her husband and her son Fred at Mount St. Peter’s Cemetery in Derby, CT.

Memorial contributions may be sent in Marie’s name to Scituate Etrusco Associates, One Common St., Scituate, MA 02066 or by clicking here.
