Marie A. Smith

Smith, Marie A. (Vertullo) of Quincy, passed away February 20, 2013.

Beloved wife of Frederick D. Smith, Sr. of Quincy. Loving mother of Frederick D. Smith, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Squantum, Wayne Smith and his wife Janet of Walpole, Caryn Smith and her fiance Donald Timmins of Quincy, and Mark Smith of Quincy. Sister of Flora DePasca of Quincy, Vincent DePasca of Quincy, and the late Rocco DePasqua. Cherished grandmother of MaryGrace Powers, Glen Misho, Elizabeth Smith, Jonathan Smith, Spencer Smith and Colin McGrath. Great grandmother of Chasey Powers. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Marie’s life centered around her loving family. She embraced her Italian heritage and enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining her family. A talented artist, she graduated from the High School of Practical Arts and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, later becoming the first art teacher at Broad Meadows School in Quincy. Marie was also instrumental in starting the Special Education program in Quincy and served as PTO president for many years. She and her husband have also been very involved in Special Olympics. An avid shopper, Marie was able to lend her expertise to her daughter for over twenty years at the clothing store, “Caryn’s Corner.” She stayed in close contact with her alumni friends and her grandson Spencer inspired her to become a passionate Red Sox fan. Marie was a caring, compassionate, and beautiful lady who always put the needs of others ahead of her own.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY.  A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Ann’s Church, Quincy at 10 AM.  Cremation will follow.  Donations in memory of Marie may be made to the Marie A. Smith Scholarship, c/o Colonial Federal Savings Bank, 15 Beach St., Quincy MA 02170.
