Marguerite Young

Marguerite (Clark) Young of Braintree passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the Wingate at Silver Lake in Kingston, MA, at the age of 92. She was born on October 10, 1919, and raised in Quincy, the daughter of the late A. Wendell and Charlotte Clark. She was the beloved wife of the late John K. Young. She was pre-deceased by her brother, W. Gordon Clark, and her sister, Miriam (Harding) Marston. Marguerite is survived by her son, John K., Jr. and wife, Mary, of Marshfield, and daughter Jean Hickey of Braintree, as well as by her grandchildren, John R. Young (Jay) and wife Laura of Spring Mills, Pennsylvania, David K. Young and wife Anita of Washington, D.C., Alison (Hickey) Williams and husband Dwynn of Waterville, Maine; and Jonathan Hickey of Braintree, and a great granddaughter, Rebecca Kaitlyn Williams of Waterville, Maine. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie Clark of Plymouth, as well as her nephew Alexander Clark and wife Davis of Norwell, her nieces Nancy (Clark) Edwards and husband Larry of Wareham, Beth (Harding) Peck and husband David of Bellingham , and Joan (Harding) DiSabato and husband Robert of Westwood, and several grandnieces and grandnephews. Marguerite graduated from Quincy High School in 1937, and Chandler Secretarial School in Boston in 1939, and worked as a secretary at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. She and her husband, John, lived in Wareham and West Bridgewater before moving to Quincy in 1945 when John began his teaching career at North Quincy High School. After moving to Weymouth in 1949, her husband contracted polio, and, as a result, became confined to a wheel chair. She, her parents, family and friends, provided the support for John to be able to return to his teaching position at North Quincy High School. During that time, Marguerite served as a caller of substitute teachers for the Quincy Public Schools, and was later employed at the Eventide Home in Quincy. In 1961 Marguerite and John moved to a one level home in Braintree. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Quincy, where she served in various capacities including Deacon, choir member, and worked in the church library. She was active in several community organizations and programs, including the South Shore Christian Women’s Club, and assisting in a patterning program for brain injured children. Her life-long love of music was demonstrated in her early years by playing the cello in the Quincy High School orchestra, and later in the Quincy Symphony Orchestra. During her retirement years she enjoyed traveling across country, and to England and Scotland. Painting, gardening, rug-braiding, and enjoying activities with her grandchildren became treasured moments. A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 262 Franklin Street, Quincy, on Friday, November 18th at 11:30 AM. A time of viewing at the church from 10:30 – 11:15 AM will precede the service. Burial will take place at Mount Wollaston Cemetery in Quincy. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the “Elevator Fund” at the First Presbyterian Church, 262 Franklin Street, Quincy, MA 02169.
