Louise I. Gillis

Louise I. Gillis, 88, of Braintree, formerly of Watertown, passed away at her home on December 28, 2016, after a lengthy illness.

Louise was born on October 11, 1928 and grew up in Watertown. She was a 1945 graduate of Watertown High School and graduated with a degree in Biochemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1949. She was employed by the City of Boston for 39 years at Boston City Hospital’s Biochemistry Department. She moved to Braintree in 1979 where she was an active member of Braintree Golf Course for many years and a devoted parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Louise lived a very active life keeping friends from grade school through college and making many new ones along the way. She enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing, and card playing but mostly the time spent with family members. Her passion was traveling the world with friends and family especially her older brother, the late Rev. Edward F. Gillis. She was a dear friend to all who knew her.

Louise was the beloved daughter of the late Edward F. and Loretto B. Gillis: loving sister of Ruth Ryan of Norwell: loving aunt to nieces Bobbie (Raymond) Kaligian of Plymouth: Cathy (Mark) Kalpin of Scituate and Ann Marie (Victor) Acker of Duxbury and to nephews Thomas (Sherrill) Barron of Lakeville: Edward (Nancy) Barron of Holliston; Paul Ryan of Brookline; Kevin (Susan) Ryan of Plymouth and Paul (Lisa) Gillis of Brockton and their children.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Rev. Edward F. and Paul C. Gillis and sisters Barbara G. Barron, Mary T. Jacobs and grandnephew Raymond A. Kaligian, III.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in St. Francis of Assisi Church in Braintree, Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Burial in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, Louise’s family is requesting that donations be made in her memory to her lifelong charity, Dominican Sisters of Hope, 299 N. Highland Ave, Ossining, NY 10562.
