Lois Cowie Kirkwood

Lois Cowie Kirkwood took her last breath on Saturday April 13, 2019 surrounded by her children and grandchildren.  Lois’ love stretched wide and far over the years; there was always more than enough to go around.  Life was a journey where obstacles were met with a strong faith, a caring heart, and a spirit of hope.

Lois was predeceased by her son Bill Cowie.  She is survived by her children Karen Williamson (Ron), Kathleen Cowie, Nancy Sordi, Chris Cowie (Beth); grandchildren Chris Williamson, Alicia Williamson, Alexandra Stedman (Rob), Michelle Sordi, Margaret Cowie, Colleen Cowie; and great-granddaughter Sophia Stedman.  She is also survived by her stepchildren, Lynette Kirkwood, Cheryl Davila (Rob), Christopher Kirkwood (Janet), Porter Kirkwood (Joanna).

Lois is a native of New York City and enjoyed living in several other areas on the eastern seaboard.  An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Reverend Dr. Kirkwood served as Assistant Professor of Ministry and Field Education at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and Co-Chaplin of Hofstra University.   As Adjunct Professor of History and Sociology, Reverend Dr. Kirkwood taught at Nassau Community College, St. Joseph’s College, and State University of New York at Westbury.  Her most recent position was as Associate Pastor at the Congregation Church of Huntington, United Church of Christ in Centerport, New York where she ministered the Children’s Education Program.

Reverend Dr. Kirkwood’s work on Christian Social Ethics is grounded in socio-historical theory and biblical ethics; focusing on issues of social justice and public policy.  Prior to her doctoral studies, Reverend Dr. Kirkwood earned a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, a Master of History with distinction and a Bachelor of Sociology and Secondary Education from the State University of New York at Stony Brook

The family is planning a private memorial at a later date.  Lois will live on in the hearts of those she influenced through her ministry of kindness and love.  Celebrate Lois’ life by donating in her memory to the Congregation Church of Huntington, United Church of Christ, 300 Washington Street, Centerport, NY 11721.
