Fontaine, Lionel Daire, Sgt (US Army Retired), of Hull, formerly of Lancaster, NH, passed away at the Brockton VA Hospital’s Hospice Facility on March 1, 2011. He was 82. Loving husband of the late Violet (Banas) McCluskey Fontaine, whose gravesite he visited almost daily for the last 14 years to start his day over coffee. Devoted son of the late George and Mary Rose (Gagne) Fontaine. Loving father of Daire Fontaine and her fiance Paul Moyer of Boston, Jean McCluskey of Hull, and the late Matthew R McCluskey, Jr., his wife Rose McCluskey and their daughter Cynthia McCluskey Newton and her husband Greg. Brother of Leonard Fontaine and his wife Eunice of Lancaster, NH, Nelson Fontaine and his wife Barbara of Groveton, NH, Doris Woodward of NH and the late Roland Fontaine and his ex-wife Sally Burke of Halifax. Beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. For 30 years, Lionel proudly served in the U.S. Army, including at Hog Island in Hull, and retired as a sergeant. During these years, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation World War II Medal with Japan clasp, Presidential Unit Citation (Syngman Rhee), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, and the United Nations Service Medal, among others. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Pembroke and enjoyed playing Bingo and driving his red 1970 Cadillac convertible. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Sunday 2-6 PM in the Pyne Keohane Funeral Home, 21 Emerald St. (off Central St.), HINGHAM. A Celebration of Life Service will be held in the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Monday prior to the Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Parish in St. Ann’s Church, Hull at 10 AM. Burial in Hull Village Cemetery. Donations in memory of Lionel may be made to the Brockton VA Hospice Program, 500 Belmont Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
