Lester B. Veno Jr., 89 passed away on September 2, 2017, at his home in Palm City, Florida.
He leaves his wife of 10 years, Jan (Maxwell), his sister Betty Forrest, his children, Susan, Steven & David, and 6 grandchildren. He will be interred with his first wife, Jean (Stevens) at Fairmont Cemetery, in East Weymouth, MA.
Les was born on June 16, 1928 in East Weymouth the son of Lester Sr. and Evelyn (Asheton) Veno. He was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception High School & Northeastern University, with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was the first member of his family to graduate college.
He began his working career at NASA, and worked there for 5 years. He then took a position with General Electric and worked for them for 45 years. He worked as an engineer and a project and program manager in their aircraft engine group. Toward the end of his career he was the program manager for the T700 jet engine that powers the Blackhawk helicopter and the F404 jet engine that powers the F-18.
Les was an avid sailor, belonging to the Wessagusset Yacht Club. He and his family would take regular sailing vacations up and down the New England coast. In his later years he took up radio controlled model sailing. His second passion was playing and coaching hockey. He played for Northeastern University, coached in the Weymouth Youth Hockey Association, and played through his sixties, playing weekly and in several “old-timer” hockey tournaments. Lastly, he was a Town Meeting Member, and served on the building committee for the Weymouth Library.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation from 8:30 – 9:30 AM in Saint Albert the Great Church 1130 Washington Street, Weymouth on Saturday Sept 9, 2017 followed by his Funeral Mass at 9:30 A.M. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Treasure Coast Hospice, in Palm City, FL. in Les Veno’s name
