Copeland, Lawrence D. of Hingham and East Orleans May 15, 2005. He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, Marian Davidson (MacTeer) Copeland. His three loving children: Lawrence D. Copeland II and his wife Claire, of East Walpole, MA, Meredith H.C. Farmer and her husband B. Craig, of Avon, CT and Jonathan B. Copeland and his wife Corinne, of Lakeville, MA. He also leaves 9 adored grandchildren and 2 cherished great-grandsons. Mr. Copeland was pre-deceased by a great-granddaughter. He also leaves a brother, Gordon E. Copeland, of Clinton, MD, his wife Phyllis, and several nieces and a nephew. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the Memorial Service to celebrate his life on Saturday at 11:00 AM. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 172 Main St, Hingham. The Rev. Robert Edson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested any memorial donations be made to “The Friends of the South Shore Hospital”, 55 Fogg Road, So. Weymouth, MA 02190. He graduated from Quincy High School and went on to serve in the Navy during World War II. He saw action in both the North Africa and the Pacific theaters and was commissioned at sea. At the end of his service he held the rank of Lt (jg). Following his military service he attended and graduated from Harvard University, with special honors. He was a member of the Class of 1948. His career eventually took him into the world of International Marketing with Northrop Grumman Corporation. For 20 years he traveled Europe, Japan and Australia, frequently accompanied by his wife. Mr. Copeland spoke French so fluently that the Paris taxicab drivers believed he was French. He also spoke German and Italian. His business relationships developed into friendships with whom he corresponded via Internet in his later years. His hobbies included local amateur theater. The Hingham Civic Chorus and the Hingham Theater for Children were blessed with his talents. These included writing several original plays, “The Mark of the Caliph” and “The Wind in the Heather”. He held leading roles in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Mr. Copeland also enjoyed painting landscapes and seascapes. There are offices throughout the world with his original artwork. He also enjoyed furniture building. His homes and his children’s homes are graced with several pieces. He was the author of various books, magazine articles and poems. Mr. Copeland was a member of the Board of Directors of The Friends of South Shore Hospital and was a co-founder of the South Shore Dancers. He served on several boards and committees for the Town of Hingham.
